Tips on the General Care of Rabbits
- Before you purchase any type of rabbit make sure it looks healthy. The rabbit should be alert and attentive not crouching in the back of his/her cage; eyes should be bright, not dull and his fur should look glossy and not dirty. If all of these things look good then it is probably fine to purchase him.
- Make sure you have the rabbits housing ready for him when he comes home. You will probably be very excited about having a new rabbit and will want to hold him a lot. Your rabbit will need a few days to adjust to his new environment so try not to overwhelm him with too much handling.
- It is okay to place two female rabbits in a cage because they will become great friends. But never put two male rabbits in the same cage, for they will fight for dominance and there is a high risk of them injuring each other.
- If you decide to keep your rabbit indoors make sure it is in a shady area, do not place his cage next to a sunny window because rabbits are very subject to heatstroke and will perish easily. Likewise for an outdoor rabbit keep him in the shade and place blocks of ice in with them when the temperature gets up to +70 F. The rabbit will lie up against these to keep cool.
- Rabbits can handle any amount of cold as long as there are no drafts.
- Be gentle with your rabbit, rabbits can be injured very easily.
- Rabbits love to dig. So never put your rabbit in a cage without a floor.
