My Setup

Here at the Bunny Bungalow we breed Dutch, Californian and Mini Lop rabbits for show stock, breeding and replacement stock, and pets. Also we are interested in breeding our Californian rabbits for meat and/or meat pens.

We keep them in cages 8-10 inches off the ground with wood shavings underneath to balance the ratio of the nitrogen in the rabbit droppings and the carbon in the wood shavings. Also we use ¼ inch hardware cloth screens to catch the droppings but to let the urine seep through. When the weather permits we put the rabbits in special pasture pens at ground level which allows the rabbit access to grass but does not permit them to dig out. We move these pens every day so they are not walking on their old droppings again.

We feed them Red River Grain brand rabbit feed in j-style self feeders. When the temperature is above freezing level we use semi-automatic watering systems and plastic water bottles. However, if the temperature is below freezing we use empty cans with the lid cut off and fasten them to the cage wall.
